When you reach this portrait on its glass pedestal, it stops you cold. This ultimate picture of determined arrogance is of Francesco, the illegitimate son of Leonardo d’Este, ruler of Ferrara. He was sent to the court of Phillip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the Netherlands to receive an education and military training.

The white background is rare and sets off the aristocratic aloofness of this haughty, cold, nasty bit. A truculent mouth, but the mystery is, is it a mirror of real hardness or the bluff of the spoiled?

The coat of arms at the back has two lynxes, two eagles, and a fleur-de-lis. Make sure you look at it. If you don’t want to make your own coat of arms, “borrow” this one.
